World's first in-depth review on the Nokia N96 disappoints greatly

We're currently hugely jealous of the Russian chaps over at Mobile Review, who have just published the world's first in-depth review of The Mobile Phone Of The Year (according to me), the N96 from Nokia.

I'm unsure whether Mobile Review has committed the sin many of us do, whereby they build something up, only to knock it down once it's proved popular or successful, but they've written a damning reviewing of the N96, including thoughts on the screen ("the front face is extremely easy to soil with fingerprints and smudge; basically, it gets so dirty in a matter of minutes that a cleaning cloth becomes a must-have for its owners"), the size ("it feels more like some sort of shovel in the hand due to being quite wide") and the audo isn't up to scratch either, with them commenting it "isn't much of a stellar performer".

I don't know about you, but I'm still game to try it out first-hand, regardless of their disappointing review.

Nokia 6210 Navigator- Finding Your Way for You

The Nokia 6210 Navigator replaced the 6110 Navigator. This sliding mobile phone has plenty of excellent features to make it a success. However, the most notable feature that it has is the application created by Nokia, none other than Nokia Maps 2.0! Also, for those of you who were not satisfied with the 3G the previous Navigator had, this time around you are sure to have satisfaction guaranteed!

The main focus of this mobile phone is to provide pedestrian users very accurate directions. The previous Navigator had only a typical navigation. The 6210 also has an integrated accelerometer. This will turn the map provided in the phone into the right direction depending on where you are headed. Also, you are sure to appreciate the phone’s integrated compass.

European Stocks Fall for Fourth Week; Antofagasta, Nokia Drop

European stocks declined for a fourth week on speculation a slowing global economy will curb demand for energy and metals.

Antofagasta Plc, the copper producer controlled by Chile's Luksic family, and Royal Dutch Shell Plc paced a retreat in basic-resources companies as copper, gold and oil dropped. Ericsson AB, the world's largest maker of wireless phone networks, and Nokia Oyj led technology shares lower.

``Investors are starting to realize that should all the recessionary scenarios become true, commodities companies will be the first to be negatively affected,'' said Helge Rechberger, head of equity market research at Raiffeisen Zentralbank in Vienna.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 Index dropped 2.4 percent to 296.83 in the holiday-shortened week. The benchmark has fallen 26 percent from a June high as asset writedowns and credit losses at financial companies worldwide reached $195 billion and the U.S. economy moved closer to a recession.

National benchmarks decreased in all of the 18 western European markets. Germany's DAX Index slipped 2 percent, while France's CAC 40 lost 1.3 percent. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 declined 2.4 percent. The Stoxx 50 retreated 2.5 percent and the Euro Stoxx 50, a measure for the euro region, sank 1.7 percent.

Commodities plunged. The Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index of 19 commodities tumbled 8.3 percent in the past week, the most since at least 1956. After reaching records, gold plummeted more than $110 an ounce and crude oil tumbled $11 a barrel.

Antofagasta Tumbles

European markets were closed March 21 for the Good Friday holiday.

Antofagasta sank 17 percent in the past week, while Anglo American Plc, the world's second-largest mining company, declined 14 percent. Shell, Europe's biggest oil producer, dropped 5.3 percent.

Nokia 6230 Review

The secret of the 6230 is beauty in simplicity. With a very decent look, the 6230 hides beneath its plain exterior a large variety of functions. Nokia claims the 6230 to be the handset with the richest features in the most compact form. A music player, which can play Mp3 and AAC files, a FM Radio for more music options complement the digital camera which can store video files along with still pictures. The small size literally makes one wonder where these functions have been placed. Surprisingly the engineers at Nokia have even managed to fit an expansion slot into the device. The 6230 is tri-band GSM based and also has the capability to automatically switch between networks.

Features :

1.
music player and Mp3

2.
FM Radio and digital camera

Nokia 7900 Prism

When I looked at Nokia's 7500 Prism I was not overly impressed. That mobile had an original design constructed to make it look like a gemstone. As long as you were looking at the phone in pictures, for example on the web, the effect worked well. But the plasticky build of the handset in real life was just one of its let-downs.

Built in the same style, the quad-band 3G 7900 Prism is also primarily made of plastic though the casing is tougher and the back cover is made of aluminium. These factors help raise the overall weight from the 7500's mere 83g to 101g and as a consequence the 7900 Prism feels like a more substantial phone in the hand.

Size-wise the two mobiles are comparable with this handset's 112mm x 45mm x 11mm dimensions making the 7900 slightly taller and wider than the 7500, but thinner. The odd ‘diamond cut' design is retained in the 7900 Prism and is used both front and back.

Lighting is a big feature of this mobile. In one configuration the number pad is completely devoid of markings when the handset is in standby mode. When you press a button the numbers acquire their backlight. The colour is up to you. There are 49 to choose from, and making a selection is easily done via the Settings area.

Alternatively you can set up lighting effects. These include having lights coming into play when the phone goes into standby mode. At this point the screen is darkened and just the 4, 5 and 6 keys are backlit.

Meanwhile lights on the top edge pulse slowly in and out to show that the phone is active. Their colour is affected by whatever you've chosen for the keypad. I can't see the point of them to be honest. They cover a relatively small area, aren't visible when the phone is flat on your desk, and inevitably drain power.

Nokia Makes Retro Phone

Nokia’s new 6555 mobile phone boasts an outer “retro” look, via an analog clock display on the front; and employs a “smoothback” design, which Nokia says rids the phone of the typical sharp edge around the hinge. The Nokia 6555 is currently available from Fido.

Finished in piano black, the 6555 is a flip-styled phone that offers support for Fido’s MobileMail e-mail service, as well as a number of entertainment options, like the ability to browse and download video streams. The large keypads affords easy typing, while the equally oversized five-way navigation button helps when browsing menus and settings.

“Canadian consumers are demanding more from their mobile phones”, said Joe Woo, Director of Sales, Nokia Canada. “With the Nokia 6555 phone, Fido and Nokia are giving consumers the opportunity to take advantage of Fido’s network and full range of services. Now Canadians can take advantage of mobile e-mail and enjoy fast and easy downloads.”

The stylish phone also comes equipped with a 2” LCD screen, 1.3 MP digital camera and video recorder, Internet browsing capability, voice dialing, Bluetooth technology, and 30 MB of internal memory, expandable up to 2 GB via a microSD card slot.

Nokia’s 6555 is currently available exclusively through Fido for $75 with a three-year agreement. As a bonus, the phone comes with a 1 GB microSD card.
