Nokia flags slowdown in mobile market

The global mobile handset market will shrink in value in euro terms this year for the first time, industry leader Nokia warned Thursday. This unexpectedly bleak assessment sent its shares nearly 13% lower.

The world’s largest mobile phone company reported a 25% rise in net profit to €1,22bn for 2008’s first quarter but said the value of the overall global mobile device market would drop in euro terms in 2008 compared with last year because of the weak dollar and slower global economic growth.

Chief financial officer Rick Simonson told a conference call that 50% of Nokia’s sales were in dollars or dollar-linked. “There is growth in this market in volume and value if you knock out this crazy currency,” he said.

CEO Olli Pekka Kallasvuo insisted Thursday a combination of slower growth and rising labour and raw material costs would have little impact on demand for mobile phones, which he described as “necessity items”. Nokia still expects the number of phones sold industry-wide to grow 10% in 2008 but these sales are expected to generate less revenue for vendors as average sale prices per phone fall.

Despite Nokia’s confidence and strong profitability, analysts have been fretting over Texas Instruments’ comments on 3G order cancellations and Sony Ericsson’s recent warning on handset sales, among other factors. In addition, analysts have expressed concerns over Nokia’s product cycle, particularly its high-end handsets, which face intense competition from Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Apple’s iPhone, according to Citigroup.

Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner, said: “Falling revenues will put more strain on handset vendors. They will have to focus on making low-end devices at a profit and this is not easy. Only Nokia seem to be able to do it at the moment. Samsung have been talking about low-end products but it takes time to learn to cater to this market.”

Companies such as Motorola have struggled in the emerging markets because they have not been able to get their production costs down low enough to make low-cost phones profitably.

Nokia 6263 Review

The Nokia 6263 is certainly a phone that is worth taking a second look. Nokia has added dedicated music controls, stereo Bluetooth, and 3G capabilities. Nokia has maintained a functional and minimalist design to the 6263 and of course, still has that very good call quality that most Nokia phones have.

As mentioned, the 6263 has a new feature, the dedicated music controls that are located below the external display. It has a flip-phone design with black-colored casing and a silver interior.

The 6263’s dimensions are 3.72 x 1.88 x 0.85 inches. It has a 1.35 inch screen that can display 128 x 160 pixels and supports 265,000 colors. It’s bright and easy on the eyes, and you can add a wallpaper design if you like. The camera lens sits just above the display. There’s no flash, but you can use the external display to take vanity shots.

But before all that, let’s not forget the built-in 1.3-megapixel camera that takes pictures in four resolutions: 1,280×960; 640×480; 320×240; and 160×120. It also has a variety of camera settings, three quality modes; an adjustable white balance; five color effects; a night mode; a self timer; a sequence option for shooting three photos in rapid successions; and a 6x zoom for use at any resolution.

You can also use the phone’s camera as a camcorder. It shoots videos in two resolutions 176×144 or 128×96 and three quality settings, with sound. The 6263 offers 30MB of internal memory but the microSD card slot can accommodate cards as large as 4GB. Photo quality is pretty good, with bright colors and sharp detail.

The phone’s mp3 player can play tracks in MP3, eAAC+, and WMA formats, as well as DRM-protected Windows Media music files from most online music stores. With the 6263’s FM radio you can save 20 station presets, save station names in your city, or direct the radio’s audio to the phone’s speaker.

Nokia RM451 Mobile Phone Gets FCC Approval

An as-yet unnamed Nokia mobile phone has made its appearance at the FCC. The phone, which carries the FCC ID RM451 (and is referred by the same name in the phone user manual), is approved for use on the EGSM 900, GSM 1800 and 1900 networks. It supports WAP 2.0 protocols including HTTP and SSL. It also supports MMS, email, instant messaging, presence enhanced contacts and remote synchronization.

The Nokia RM451 also includes 1GB of internal memory. It supports the Nokia Xpress audio messaging application, as well as the ability to create Flash messages. Flash messages are text messages that are instantly displayed upon receipt. Note that these messages are not automatically saved into the SMS application's Inbox.

The phone also supports Bluetooth. Tons of profiles are supported, including: SIM access, object push, file transfer, dial-up networking, headset, hands-free, service discovery application, generic access, serial port, and generic object exchange. No name, no word on the availability or pricing. But the phone looks stylish enough, so I won't be surprised if it is one of Nokia's fashion phones.

FITURES :

blutooth phone
MMS, email, instant messaging

Nokia Luna 8600 Review

Nokia has never been afraid of trying out new things. Its daring and innovative phones have made a big impact in the market. Some of these gambles have turned out to be good, others however turned out to be a bust. One of Nokia’s not so successful model is the Nokia 8800. Now, we have its descendant, the Nokia 8600. It has a similar slider design with almost identical dimensions, but it replaces the 8800’s silver-steel casing with a more subdued black.

The 8600 features capabilities that are a lot better than the 8800. It has a 2 megapixel camera and stereo bluetooth support.

As mentioned, the 8600 is quite similar in design to the 8800, except of course for those slight tweaks. Though it retains the steel casing on its rear face, the all-black color scheme of the Luna looks a bit more professional. At 4.21 inches by 1.77 inches by 0.63 inch, the Luna is just about the same size as the 8800.

The Luna has a 2-inch display that is capable of showing 16 million colors. It has brilliant and sharp colors and has beautiful graphics. One thing that would probably detract users is that smaller text on the screen looks a bit blurred. However, the display has a variety of adjustable settings including power-saver and sleep modes. You also can change the font size and personalize the Luna’s standby mode to choose which features and information you’d like to be readily accessible form the standby display.

Below the screen, you have the Luna’s navigation controls. Completing the exterior of the phone is a micro USB on the right spine. The volume rocker is on the left spine on the top end.

As for its features, the Luna is a bit more advanced than the 8800. Luna’s phone book holds five phone numbers, an e-mail address, Web site address, a company name and job title, a nickname, a street address, a birthday, and notes. You can save callers to groups and you can pair them with a photo, a video, and one of 20 64-chord polyphonic ringtones.

Other features include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a voice recorder, a speakerphone, instant messaging, an alarm lock, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a countdown timer, and a stopwatch.

There’s also a stereo Bluetooth, speaker-independent voice commands and dialing, a world clock, USB mass storage, PC syncing, a unit and currency converter, Nokia’s Wireless Presenter for remote control of a PC, and a translator for converting simple words into Spanish, French, or Portuguese.

The Luna’s 2-megapixel camera takes pictures in seven resolutions, from 1,600×1,200 down to 160×120. You get a variety of camera settings including three quality settings, five color effects, a night mode, an adjustable white balance, a multishot mode, and an 8x zoom.

The camcorder shoots videos in two resolutions (176×144 and 128×96) with sound. Other options are similar to those of the still camera, and you can mute the sound if you wish.

What’s missing on the Luna’s camera however is the brightness setting. I also lacks flash and the protrait setting that most phones have.

The Luna’s music player plays tracks in a variety of formats, including AAC, MP3, and WMA formats. Its design is similar to those on other Nokia phones, which means it’s minimalist but easy to use.

Features include random and repeat modes, an equalizer, and stereo widening. Loading music tracks on the phone is easy; you can connect it to a computer with a USB cable and transfer your chosen tracks. The Luna’s FM radio offers 20 presets, but you’ll need the included stereo headset to act as an antenna.

The Luna’s music quality was satisfactory on the whole. The volume is a bit than the call volume, and the clarity is decent.

The Luna has a rated talk time battery life of 4 hours. According to FCC radiation tests the Nokia Luna 8600 has a digital SAR rating of 0.72 watt per kilogram.

Deal Of The Day - Nokia N81 8Gb - under £22 per month

What does it take to get a latest generation smartphone? Traditionally, acquiring such a handset has been an expensive undertaking. Now, Dial-A-Phone has created a deal that gives you enough free minutes per month to make the tariff usable and line rental that will not frighten you away. The canny out there, however, will utilise the cashback money to lower this phone's costs to an average of just £21.11 per month. A bargain for such a handset.

Look and Feel

The Nokia N81 8GB is certainly the most attractive Nseries phone to date.

Features

This phone boasts 8GB of built-in memory and, as one of Nokia's flagship music devices, it comes pre-loaded with the Nokia Music Store.

Ease of Use

The keys are spaced out and the multimedia button provides direct access to music, games, photo gallery, important contacts and recent internet bookmarks.

Performance

Downloading music via a PC or direct to the handset is effortless and the phone sports a 3.5mm headphone jack, making it easy to connect to good-quality cans.

Battery Life

The talktime of 240 minutes is sufficient, but the standby time of 410 hours is quite impressive.

Nokia 5310 XpressMusic

Consumers today want everything. They want everything, all the features they like, into one device. Well, if you love music, the Nokia has got the piece for you. The Nokia 5310 combines the best of both worlds - a portable music player with a wireless communications device.

The 5310 is a smooth and sleek phone. Every time you see it, you get to imagine a cool new sports car that you want to show off to all of your friends. With its 9.9mm thickness, the 5310 is perfect for listening to your favorite tunes while jogging around the block or commuting to work or school via a bus, taxi, or subway train.

Other features you will notice is its build quality. The Nokia 5310 is solidly built. While sleek, the aluminum sides and color arrangement causes the phone to appear elegant, yet modest. Nokia’s placing of the 3.5 mm headphone jack at the mobile phone’s top, was an outstanding design choice. This conveniently prevents the cables from becoming knotted up. Also, the music control keys rise up perfectly off the phone’s surface, making them easy to locate when the phone is concealed in a purse or pants pocket.

The Nokia 5310 features a 240 X 302 pixels display, with 16 million colors. With this, users will definitely enjoy text messaging, pictures messaging and pictures that are displayed crisply and brilliantly.

Of course, as this is a music phone, the 5310 sounds as good as it looks. It has an audio messaging feature that allows users to record personal voice message and then transmit it to compatible gadgets. However, the main audio feature of this model is the Music Player that accommodates your favorite formats, including MP3, Midi, ACC, eAAC and WMA. Boasting of 18 hours of playback time, the Nokia 5310 can provide you with listening pleasure for a long time.

And, if you prefer a more spontaneous music selection, you can use the Nokia 5310’s FM radio. Lastly, if ringtones are your forte, this phone will be sweet music to your ears, providing True Tones and MP3 file formats.

The Nokia 5310 does not merely look and sound good. It compensates for its tiny 103 mm x 44 mm size, with several fantastic features. The tri-band EGSM 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz networks let you be truly global in a globalized world. Meanwhile, Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 connectivity will give you some options when downloading your beloved songs and ringtones.

The pictures that the phone’s 2 mega pixel camera with 4x digital zoom produces are inferior to those of digital cameras. Nonetheless, remember that it is impractical to haul a digital camera with you everywhere. On the other hand, the Nokia 5310 mobile phone epitomizes convenience, allowing you to catch any shot, and at any time.

Nokia’s Xpress Music mobile phone series seems to have it all, combining an excellent blend of quality form and functions. The Nokia 5310 mobile phone continues this tradition. Combining a sleek appearance and packed with wonderful features, it certainly provides its user with much value.
